Hey there! If you’re in the business of manufacturing, you’ve probably heard of progressive stamping dies. As a progressive stamping die supplier, I’ve dealt with all sorts of materials for these dies. So, I thought I’d share with you what materials are commonly used for progressive stamping dies. Let’s kick things off with tool steels. Tool steels are like the bread and butter of progressive stamping die materials. They’re super popular because they have a great combo of hardness, toughness, and wear resistance. One of the most commonly used tool steels is D2. D2 steel is air – hardened and can hold up well under high – stress stamping operations. It’s got high carbon and chromium content, which gives it excellent wear resistance. This means that dies made from D2 steel can last a long time, even when stamping hard materials like stainless steel.<\/p>\n

Another great tool steel is A2. A2 is a cold – work tool steel. It’s known for its good combination of hardness and toughness. Unlike D2, A2 is more ductile. This means it’s less likely to crack under impact, which is really important in progressive stamping where there are a lot of repeated strikes. A2 is often used for dies that need to form complex shapes because it can handle the bending and stretching involved in the stamping process without breaking.<\/p>\n

H13 is also a well – known tool steel in the progressive stamping world. H13 is a hot – work tool steel, but it’s also used in some cold – stamping applications. It has outstanding heat resistance and can withstand high temperatures generated during stamping. This makes it a great choice for high – speed stamping operations where heat build – up can be a problem. Dies made from H13 can stay hard and maintain their shape even when things get really hot.<\/p>\n

Now, let’s move on to carbide. Carbide is a super – hard material made from a combination of carbon and other elements like tungsten or titanium. Carbide dies are extremely wear – resistant, much more so than tool steels. This makes them ideal for stamping very hard materials like high – strength alloys or for high – volume production runs.<\/p>\n

Tungsten carbide is the most common type used in progressive stamping dies. It has a high melting point and excellent hardness. Tungsten carbide dies can produce a large number of stamped parts with very little wear, which means less downtime for die replacement and lower production costs in the long run. However, carbide is also more brittle than tool steel. So, when designing dies with carbide inserts, you need to be careful about the stress distribution to avoid cracking.<\/p>\n

Next up is powdered metallurgy (PM) steels. PM steels are made by compacting and sintering metal powders. This process allows for a more uniform distribution of alloying elements in the steel, which results in better properties compared to traditional cast steels. PM steels have high hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.<\/p>\n

One of the benefits of PM steels is that they can be tailored to specific applications. Stainless steel is another material that I sometimes use for progressive stamping dies. There are different grades of stainless steel, and the most commonly used for dies are martensitic stainless steels. Martensitic stainless steels can be hardened through heat treatment, giving them good wear resistance. They’re also corrosion – resistant, which is a big plus if the stamping process involves using lubricants or if the parts are going to be in a corrosive environment.<\/p>\n

When choosing a material for a progressive stamping die, there are several factors to consider. First of all, the material you’re stamping matters a lot. If you’re stamping soft materials like aluminum, you might not need the most wear – resistant die material. But if you’re stamping hard materials like high – strength steel, you’ll definitely want a die made from a tough and wear – resistant material.<\/p>\n

The production volume is also important. For low – volume production, you might be able to get away with a less expensive die material. But for high – volume production, a more durable material like carbide or a high – end tool steel will be worth the investment.<\/p>\n

The complexity of the stamping operation is another factor. If you’re doing simple punching operations, a less expensive tool steel might work. But for complex forming and blanking operations, you’ll need a material that can handle the stress and deformation involved.<\/p>\n
