Tool steels are like the bread and butter of progressive stamping die materials. They&#8217;re super popular because they have a great combo of hardness, toughness, and wear resistance. One of the most commonly used tool steels is D2. D2 steel is air &#8211; hardened and can hold up well under high &#8211; stress stamping operations. It&#8217;s got high carbon and chromium content, which gives it excellent wear resistance. Carbide is a super &#8211; hard material made from a combination of carbon and other elements like tungsten or titanium. Carbide dies are extremely wear &#8211; resistant, much more so than tool steels. This makes them ideal for stamping very hard materials like high &#8211; strength alloys or for high &#8211; volume production runs.<\/p>\n<p>Tungsten carbide is the most common type used in progressive stamping dies. It has a high melting point and excellent hardness. Tungsten carbide dies can produce a large number of stamped parts with very little wear, which means less downtime for die replacement and lower production costs in the long run. However, carbide is also more brittle than tool steel. So, when designing dies with carbide inserts, you need to be careful about the stress distribution to avoid cracking.<\/p>\n<p>Next up is powdered metallurgy (PM) steels. PM steels are made by compacting and sintering metal powders. This process allows for a more uniform distribution of alloying elements in the steel, which results in better properties compared to traditional cast steels. They&#8217;re also corrosion &#8211; resistant, which is a big plus if the stamping process involves using lubricants or if the parts are going to be in a corrosive environment.<\/p>\n<p>When choosing a material for a progressive stamping die, there are several factors to consider. First of all, the material you&#8217;re stamping matters a lot. If you&#8217;re stamping soft materials like aluminum, you might not need the most wear &#8211; resistant die material. But if you&#8217;re stamping hard materials like high &#8211; strength steel, you&#8217;ll definitely want a die made from a tough and wear &#8211; resistant material.<\/p>\n<p>The production volume is also important. For low &#8211; volume production, you might be able to get away with a less expensive die material.
